Our client is a highly successful Engineering business in the North East. They are currently looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their Newcastle office on a permanent basis. Reporting to the Product Lead, the Senior Design Engineer is responsible for the coordination and successful delivery of Engineering projects. In this role, you will take ownership to provide technical leadership of a team of Engineers in the successful delivery of projects, within the specified time, budget, to the specification and the required quality standards.
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Role
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will ensure that the Engineering team clearly understand their responsibilities throughout the full project lifecycle (concept through to installation), taking ownership to make key decisions, call reviews when required and check / approve design documentation within the design team.
Main Responsibilities include:
- Provide supervision to a team of Engineers including coaching, mentoring, providing direction and intervention when required
- Carry out concept and detail design of mechanical systems. Produce supporting calculations, models, drawings, specifications and BOMs as required.
- Interpret mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and control requirements to ensure that the project is designed to perform as required.
- Support the failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) process and take part in design safety reviews
- Ensure that mechanical, hydraulic and electrical interfaces are considered in the design process.
- Act as the interface for the project between the Engineering Manager / Product Lead / Project Manager and Engineering Team to ensure that the customer and project requirements are fully understood, actioned and delivered.
- Producing hand calculations and detailed analysis as necessary to demonstrate fitness for purpose of all designs undertaken
About You
The successful Senior Mechanical Engineer will have experience working in a multi-disciplinary design environment with experience in the design and manufacture of some or all of the following: Trenchers, Cable/Pipe lay, LARS and bespoke Onshore and Offshore equipment.
You will have an analytical and methodical approach to problem solving and the ability to lead, delegate and support the Engineering project team in order to deliver to specification, budget and timescale. You must have a flexible approach with the ability to work across multiple disciplines.
Other requirements include:
- Engineering design and development experience, demonstrated over 8 years + in a relevant environment
- Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant engineering subject
- Desirably, be a Member/Fellow of recognised Engineering body (e.g. IMechE) with Chartered Engineer status.
- Thorough knowledge of mechanical theory, design of mechanical systems and selection of components in the onshore, offshore and subsea sectors.
- Ability to provide technical expertise / guidance during the assembly / commissioning and installation phases of the project.
- Awareness and appreciation of market trends and emerging technologies relevant to services, project or product developments
- Experience of dealing with customers in technical discussions and supporting the project management and commercial teams in negotiations
